Online Bingo History: History of Bingo from Beano to Present Date
The origins of present day bingo can be traced back to 16th century Italy, when an Italian lottery game named 'Lo Giuoco Del Lotto D'Italia' was introduced to the public.

Played on every Saturday, this game was the first state lottery to be played in Italy and while church condemned it, the popularity of this game spread by leaps and bounds, transcending the borders of France, where it came to be known as 'Le Lotto'. During 1770s, it found favor amongst the wealthy Frenchmen and was played using numbered wooden discs.

The bingo fever swept across the country and it soon became popular throughout the Europe, making way in to Germany in the 1800s. In Germany, the game was largely played for educational purposes to help teach children mathematics and other subjects.

The credit of introducing bingo to the Americans goes to one man - Edwin Lowe, a toy salesman from New York. Once, while traveling through the Atlanta in Georgia, Lowe stumbled upon a game at a local carnival. This game was called 'beano', as all participants carried some dried beans and a card with numbered squares.

The game moderator randomly picked numbered wooden discs and announced the numbers to the players. Each time the called number matched the number on a player's card, it was covered using a dried bean and the first player to get a straight line of 5 numbers had to shout 'Beano!' in order to claim his win.

Lowe recognized the potential of this game at an early stage and decided to take it back to his native place New York. There he introduced this game to his friends, who were as fascinated as the players at the carnival. During one such game such, a female player was so excited upon winning, she stuttered and accidentally yelled 'Bingo!' instead of 'beano'. This is how Bingo got its modern day name.

As bingo picked in popularity, Lowe realized that if the game were to be played in a large groups, more uniquely numbered cards were needed. Without much ado, he hired the services of Carl Leffler, a Columbia university math professor, who by the year 1930 devised six thousand different combinations of bingo cards.

Since then there was no looking back! The bingo bug bit the United States and from there it took the entire world under its spate.

Today, different versions of this game are played around the world and have even evolved with the changing technology. Online bingo, for example, is the latest craze to have overcome the bingo lovers. Millions of people across the continents are enjoying bingo right from the comfort of their homes.
